Auto enable group email notifications doesn't work

Description
Subscribing to the group, and enabling email notification, is a two step process, and one that users are likely to forget. The setting on the project page, which looks like it should make it automatic for new subscribers to the group, doesn't seem to work.

Isn't this one of the modules that is keeping us from going to 1.5? Any idea when that is likely to be possible?

This bug has been recognized at Drupal.org and is fixed, but a lot of other things have also changed in the "organic groups" module since we installed it in The Hive. An upgrade might be appropriate, but probably needs testing first.
