PROGRAMMER ANALYST / Progress OpenEdge

POSITION

Contribute to the design, development, testing and implementation of internal-focused multi-tier client/server and web-based applications in a manner that meets the business objectives of Ovid Technologies. Most of the development will utilize Progress “OpenEdge” technologies (experience OpenEdge developers preferred, but we will train a more junior level developer). The selected candidate will have a strong desire to creatively improve internal productivity and make everyone’s jobs more rewarding through the application of innovative office automation technology. Reports to Director Applications Development.
- Work with internal users (production, marketing, sales, finance and shipping) to develop business requirements, and then design & develop ad hoc solutions that support business needs (process automation, custom tools, ad hoc reporting, etc.).
- Analyze and modifying existing applications, design & develop new applications, author and execute test plans, and prepare applications for installation.
- Provide system support and technical problem resolution for internal customers.

Other Duties & Responsibilities:

- Analyze project requirements and specifications, and develop systems prototypes, conferring with users and with the Project Manager regarding business needs.
- Participate in code and design reviews for assigned projects.
- Analyze existing programs, design new programs & program modifications, prepare detailed specifications, and design database tables.
- Code new programs and program modifications.
- Prepare test plans; perform unit and system testing, and review results with Project Manager and users.
- Develop implementation procedures to minimize impact on operations. Prepare installation documentation and monitor installations.
- Provide training to users and operators on new applications or application changes.
- Keep Project Manager informed of project progress. Prepare weekly status reports for all assigned projects.
- Assist users with queries, query tools, and database questions.
- Recommend programming projects or changes to programming assignments to the department manager.
- Assist with database administration functions, including database design, definition and performance tuning.

QUALIFICATIONS

- 1-2 years programmer analyst experience developing business applications and/or database applications using any technology stack essential. We will consider candidates currently programming in any of the following: Java, .Net, C++, Cobol, etc.
- Experience with Progress OpenEdge framework using ABL (formerly known as Progress 4GL) preferred but not essential (we will train).
- Strong user interface and database design and development skills preferred.
- Should have solid experience gathering and interpreting business requirements.
- Experience with SQL Server or Oracle database a plus.
- Experience in both procedural and OO programming preferred.
- Experience with COM, .Net (C#, VB.Net), JavaScript, HTML, ASP, SQL Server, SQL / T-SQL, Oracle, PL/SQL, Windows Server, and Citrix Xenapp are all pluses.
- Should be a highly motivated, detail-oriented and innovative, with a passion for understanding and then solving complex business problems through the application of technology.
