Google Chrome

I assume everybody has tried out Google Chrome by now. It's been available for download for nearly an hour already. ;-)

It is of immediate interest to me, because of the AJAX I use in Analyst. Last week, I downloaded and tried out IE 8, beta 2. Now, as far as I'm aware, I'm using pretty old, straightforward standards-compliant javascript in my browser pages (which work fine in Opera and Firefox), but IE still doesn't work.

As you might have guessed, I found that Google Chrome works fine with Analyst. So, I'll support Firefox, Opera, and Chrome, but IE is still out.

So far I like Chrome, but there are a couple of key things missing. Most important is the 'master password'. Chrome will store passwords, but I didn't see any place to set the master password. (Maybe I'm just missing something?) Also important is Open in New Tab. I don't see any configuration option for opening the new tab right away, like Firefox makes it an option.

I like Opera's approach of having two options on the context menu for opening a link: "Open in new tab" and "Open in background tab". I find I use them both a lot.

So, I'll be sticking with Opera for now, but I'm looking forward to when Chrome adds some of these basics. From what I've read about the guts of Chrome, it is a pretty important leap forward in web browsers, and it is likely to have a big long term impact on those of us writing browser applications.

I read something recently

I read something recently about IE8 and the promise to make it compliant with standards which indicated that the default behavior was for it to be compliant with prior IE, but that there was a setting to switch that.

Re: more IE8

Yes, I'd read about that too, and that was a big part of what encouraged me to try. I did try it with that setting, but it still didn't work.
